C. japonica 'Akashigata' originated in Kanto District of Japan and was imported into Europe by Louis van Houtte of Brussels, Belgium who sold it to the Caledonia Nursery circa 1887 where it was named 'Lady Clare'.

Bloom: The large  4.72" - 5.51" semi-double bloom is deep pink, with 13 wide petals. The stamens are a small cylindrical cluster with yellow filaments that are reddish at root.

Plant: Vigorous, bushy growth.

Leaf: The leaves are large and elliptical, reflexed and slightly keeled, with a caudate apex, obtuse base and smooth surface.

Bloom season: Early to midseason.
