This C. japonica is chance seedling originated at Magnolia Gardens, of John's Island, South Carolina in the early 1900s.

Bloom: The medium 4.3" x 2.3" semi-double to loose peony bloom is madder red to coppery bronze, intermixed with golden stamens with pink filaments. The outer petals are 2" x 2" and round. The margins are smooth, reflexed, with a rounded apex. The base is rounded or slightly lobed, red with darker veins. The inner petaloids are erect, recurved, and smaller toward the center. The stamens are shorter than the petaloids and hidden among them.


Plant: The plant habit is spreading. The growth rate is slow.

Leaf: The glossy green leaves are large and wide.

Bloom season: Midseason.
