This 10-year-old C. japonica seedling of ‘Royal Velvet’ first bloomed in 2007. It was originated by C. M. and Lillian Gordy of Ocala, Florida and registered by Lillian Gordy of Ocala, Florida and propagated by Loch Laurel Nursery of Valdosta, Georgia.
Bloom: The medium sized 3.75” x 1” single form flower is dark red with very dark veins. It has 7 petals with bright gold anthers and pink filaments. It is a profuse bloomer that falls in one piece with consistent form and heavy petal texture. It has a long bloom season.
Plant: The plant habit is upright. The growth rate is vigorous and very rapid. The plant is suitable for landscaping and exhibition uses.
Leaf: The dark green leaves average 3.75” x 1.5” with medium serration.
Bloom season: Early.
