This 5-year-old chance sasanqua 'Hiryu' seedling seedling that first bloomed in 1959 and was first commercially introduced and published in Nuccio's Nurseries Catalog in 1963. It was registered with the American Camellia Society in 1971.
Bloom: The single flower is brilliant red with golden yellow anthers. Small, average size is 3" with 5 to 7 petals. It has outstanding texture and holding qualities for a sasanqua.
Plant: Upright, dense and medium growth rate.This is a most satisfactory sasanqua shrub for landscaping with a bushy upright shrub, small very dark green foliage and small brilliant red flowers are most attractive.
Leaf: Dark green leaves average 1" x 1".
