Chartered in 1959, the Auburn-Opelika Men’s Camellia Club has provided a forum on Camellia culture and gar-dening for interested individuals in Lee County and sur-rounding areas. Monthly meetings feature programs on propagation, site preparation, fertilization and manage-ment of Camellias and other landscape plants. The club sponsors a gala Valentine’s Banquet for spouses in Feb-ruary and a Spring Camellia Show in late winter when blooms are most abundant.

During spring and summer months the club usually meets at members’ homes to tour their gardens and discuss horticultural practices. The monthly programs and garden tours are especially helpful to new members with little or no experience growing camellias.

The Club has planted camellias at the State Capitol in Montgomery, the President’s home at Auburn University, the Opelika Chamber of Commerce and Auburn’s Kiesel Park. Tin 2010, the Club established an Heirloom Camel-lia Garden at Pioneer Park in Loachapoka.

A-O Men’s Camellia Club members have become quite well known for propagating and growing new varieties of Camellias. Many of these new varieties are recognized and registered by the American Camellia Society.
