The Southeast Alabama Camellia Society hosted a celebration of Alabama’s state flower, the camellia, on Jan. 7 at 10:30 a.m. in the botanical center at the Dothan Area Botanical Gardens.

The guest speaker was Dothan native attorney Forrest Latta of Mobile. Latta is involved with camellias and their distribution in the state of Alabama.

The camellia was first designated as Alabama’s state flower in 1959. Latta and the Mobile Camellia Society were invited to plant camellias around Alabama’s state capital and the Governor’s Mansion in Montgomery on Jan. 7, 2005.  See More on Governor's Mansion Planting.

As a way to commemorate Jan. 7 as the Day of the Camellia, the Southeast Alabama Camellia Society in Dothan hosted the celebration which was attended by Alabama’s first lady Dianne Bentley, members of the American Camellia Society in Fort Valley, Ga., and representatives from the Dothan mayor’s office.
