The Coastal Georgia Camellia Society of Savannah, Georgia was founded in 2017 dedicated to the education and enjoyment of Camellias. We work with the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens, local garden clubs, our regional Master Gardeners, and other like-minded groups and individuals interested in promoting camellias.
Our organization's mission, vision and values are based upon our collective responsibility and pride in Savannah's Camellia heritage. Through the Judge Solomon Trail at the Coastal Georgia Botanical Garden, Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah's Squares and our own gardens, we are committed to the preservation and extension of Camellias in our city and region.
Within this mission, our primary objective is the maintenance and expansion of the Judge Arthur Solomon Camellia Trail, located at the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens. The Coastal Gardens is home to one of the most diverse and unique camellia collections in North America.
The Camellia Trail was named after Arthur Solomon, who served as a Chatham County, Georgia commissioner for 46 years. A beloved figure, he was a co-founder of the American Camellia Society and was known for beautifying Savannah roadways with love oaks, camellias, azaleas and palm trees. He was given the honorary title of "Judge" for his years of service to the community.
Our secondary objective is to share knowledge, and the expertise of others, with our membership. We know of no other botanical genus that has a rich history, variety and opportunity for delighting anyone interested in learning about the complexity of Camellias. We accomplish this through regular meetings, our annual Camellia Show and Festival held every February, as well as tours, workshops and opportunities to volunteer.
Meetings are held on the second Sunday of each month, September through May, at the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens, 2 Canebrake Road, Savannah, GA 31419. We have knowledgeable and interesting speakers plus experts that provide advice and guidance on the growing and care of Camellias. We heartily welcome anyone who has an interest in Camellias. Please come join us!
