To use a compass, hold it flat and level, find North with the red magnetic needle, then turn your body until the needle is in the orienting arrow ("put red Fred in the shed") to align with your map or destination; look for a landmark in the direction of the travel arrow to walk towards, and repeat the process to stay on course.
