Longue Vue’s historical gardens, encompassing eight acres and a series of garden “rooms,” were designed by Ellen Biddle Shipman, one of the leading landscape designers of the period who was called “the dean of American women in landscape architecture” by House and Garden magazine in 1934.

Longue Vue is considered to be her master work. The Wild Garden includes the contributions of Caroline Dorman, a leading Iris nativist. From 1990 though 2002, Longue Vue engaged in significant garden restoration to ensure the health and historic authenticity of its gardens.

However, much of that progress was undone when Longue Vue lost two-thirds of its gardens in Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. Responding quickly to the need for a recovery plan, Longue Vue, the Garden Conservancy and Heritage Landscapes, engaged in a planning process for the renewal of the landscape.

The result is the Landscape Renewal Project, which sets forth a plan to re-introduce the overall Shipman design, which had been diminished over the years and yield a sustainable, maintainable landscape that respects historical evolution and supports learning, enjoyment and access for users.
